What makes Sweden so Great to live in? Our Journey to Sweden – Part 5 – Coming home

coming home
Coming home, slowly, we drove up the mountain, our hearts pounding in our bodies. We knew that this single moment could change our entire live, a new beginning, a new life, a new adventure. The house is the last one on the mountain, and in front of it a 1 hectare of forest is blocking the view, and we had to drive past. At that moment, we knew it… we were there… was this our forever home?

Coming Home

Coming home, that was the feeling we had. We drove on and arrived at the corner of the property. My heart made a little leap when I saw the house. On one hand, it looked exactly like it did in the photos and as I had imagined, but on the other hand, it was so much bigger than I expected.
A beautiful forest, a beautiful meadow, a lovely, large house, a guesthouse, and two beautiful barns.
If you come from the Netherlands, where houses are unaffordable, small, and have gardens of only about 150 m², where you always have neighbors… if that’s where you come from, this feels like winning the biggest lottery imaginable.
Within seconds, I saw my entire future in front of me: our mini farm, our freedom, our love for the house, and for our life.

We had agreed with the real estate agent that we could stay on the property with our camper.
This was because we had just driven 2,100 km and would be signing the contract for the property within two days. We were deeply grateful that the agent was willing to help us so generously with this big adventure.
The house was no longer inhabited, and therefore, as an exception, we were allowed to look around the house and the property for 1.5 days and sleep in our camper on the land. So we parked at the front of the property and immediately felt at home. (Like two little kids in a candy store.)

That first afternoon, we explored the property—what was there to see, and what was included in the price. In Sweden, most homes are sold with all the contents included, so everything you see comes with the purchase of the house. And believe me… There was plenty!
The entire barn was full of belongings, and in the house, there was even a couch, table, dining table, bed, and much more.
Basically, everything felt right right away. Of course, we had different ideas for the house and the surroundings, but at its core, this immediately felt like our home.

One thing we really had to get used to was how early it gets dark in northern Sweden. It was November 1, 2022, and by around half past three, it was already pitch dark! Of course, we weren’t used to that. But honestly, it was probably a good thing that day—we were exhausted from all the impressions.

What did we do the next day? Watch the next episode…
