Biological eggs from our Ladies

Our farm has expanded with beautiful hens and selling biological eggs to our local community. Read more about the expansion of our farm in the North of Sweden, and get to know our beautiful “Ladies”.

The story of our chicken ladies.

We had dreamed for years of running a farm.
After purchasing our dream farm in Sweden, we already had an idea of how we wanted to set up our animal barn. In the summer of 2024 we worked intensively for half a year, and just before winter arrived, our chicken and goat barn was finished. A nice extension to the old barn but then fully insulated.

Of course, we first researched everything thoroughly on Google.
Menno had kept chickens in the past in the Netherlands, so he was able to teach me well how to take care of chickens on a daily basis.

Which breeds of Chickens do we have on the farm

When you are new to a country, everything works different, so it was also with our chickens.
Through Blocket (a sales platform in Sweden), we found a very kind chicken breeder.
She lived about 1,5 hours away from us. In Sweden, distance is relative, whatever you want to do, you have to count in travel, it’s always a factor. In Sweden everything takes a lot of time and often a lot of distance to overcome.

By appointment, we decided to go to this woman with all our travel crates.
She had beautiful chickens, 4 months old: white chickens, brown chickens, gray, and black.
The fun thing about chickens in Sweden is that they all lay different colored eggs. In a moment I will introduce our ladies and tell you which colors of eggs they lay.

After an adventure of 1.5 hours, the ladies finally arrived at their forever home with us.
They did very well during the first few days. At that time, the chickens didn’t lay any eggs, they are still too young.

One week later, we picked up more chickens from the same woman.
If you want to form a group of chickens, it’s best to take them all of the same age and from the same nest. Eventually, by the time winter arrived, we had a total of 20 chickens. A big family of hens….

Outside, it began to snow and the cold entered Sweden. Our ladies sat peacefully and safely inside their warm coop. Throughout the entire winter, they had time to grow bigger and stronger.

First let me introduce our “Ladies”:

Plymouth Rock chicken

This chicken originally comes from America.
These chickens are black with white, they have a large build, they are gentle and sweet, and they are very calm.
The eggs of these chickens are soft pink in color.

Welsumer chickens

These chickens comes from the Netherlands, the country where we originally come from. They have a mainly brown color with a black glow and a golden-colored breast. They get along well with other types of chickens and are quite social and independent.
They lay medium sized brown eggs with speckles!

Marans chickens

The Marans chicken comes originally from France.
They are a sweet and calm breed.
The eggs of the Marans are dark brown and little smaller than the Welsumer eggs — truly beautiful chickens to see.

Cream Legbar

These chickens comes from the United Kingdom.
A very funny chickens to look at, especially their heads with a specific kind of “hairstyle” and beautiful colored feathers such as gray and brown.
The eggs of the Cream Legbar are soft blue and small in size.

Silverudds Blå

These beautiful white-and-gray chickens come originally from Sweden, they are here in their own surrounding.
The Sylverruds are a very social and mischievous breed.
A real nice addition in our henhouse.
The eggs of this breed are pastel green and small in size.

Now you know wich breeds we have on our farm. This explains the broad pallet of colors in the eggs we sell. We feed our chickens only biologically feed and they are free roaming in spring, summer, and autumn.

Spring comes slowley in The Nort of Sweden

When spring of 2025 slowly arrived, the ladies suddenly started laying eggs.
Beautiful little eggs—blue, green, pink, and brown.
We were so proud of our chickens.

From spring onward, the chickens could happily go outside.
We built a very nice, large outdoor run for them. Safe and protected against the wildlife here in the area. We have foxes, bears, lynx and marters… all fond of chickens. So the outside area is about 200 square meters, completely covered with netting so birds of pray do not stand a chance.

We don’t just want to sell organic eggs, but eggs from chickens that have a pleasant and happy life, chickens that always have enough food, are allowed to go outside or stay inside if they want to, and are simply happy “Ladies”.

Every day we visit them several times a day for feeding and fresh water, in summer, winter, and spring or fall. Menno always does the morning care: he checks if everything is going well, gives them fresh water, and always a little treat.
Kim does the afternoon care: checking the water, collecting the eggs, and bringing some treats. Saying goodnight and making sure they are all safe.

In between, we often drink a cup of coffee with our Ladies.

Selling our biological eggs

We have our chicken feed transported once a year from the Netherlands.
This way, we also stay a bit connected to where we come from—our country of birth.

So our chickens are truly happy, and you can see and taste that in our eggs.

Last year, starting in May, we began our sales stand in our field.
We really wanted to share our passion and love with people.
After recovering from a heavy belly operation in April 2025, Menno built a beautiful sales stand.
With his knowledge and skilled hands, we created our lovely stand, standing in our field so people can buy our products during the no frost season.
Slowly, our big dream starting to come true.

Expanding the Flock

In the summer of 2025, we wanted to expand our “chicken family.” After many preparations—such as enlarging the indoor area (which was made twice as big), and giving the outdoor run a second play area (in total, our outdoor run is now 200 m², and they absolutely love it!)—we were ready for family expansion.

Through Blocket, we found somewhat older chickens, a type called the Lohman chicken. These chickens lay very beautiful, large brown eggs. Lohman chickens are also often used for supermarket eggs; they are true laying hens.
They are beautifully brown in color, very mischievous, and you can really play and cuddle with these chickens.

The chickens we picked up were in very poor condition.
We normally would not buy chickens when they are in such a bad shape, bad investment, but we could not let them be mistreated with their current owner. They lived in a very small shed with more than 100 chickens together, and out of boredom they had pecked at each other. They simpley looked horrible, all their feathers on their backs and chests were gone. So we took them anyway. It took some time and love and care, but they are now part of the flock. We wanted to give these chickens a good life, and that’s why we took them in. Twenty new Lohman chickens became part of our farm familie.

After one week of practice—by making two coops, separating them, letting them get used to each other—the big day came in summer: the dividing fence was removed, and we had 40 chickens walking together. Because the coop is so large and there is so much space and freedom, we had no problems introducing the chickens to each other.
All the chickens were happy and content.

Our successes

Our sales stand became a big hit, and we were able to sell 30-50 eggs per day locally.
In summer (May to September), customers are welcome to drive by and choose their own eggs at our stand. Payment is easy via Swish, so customers can come whenever it suits them.

In winter (October to May), we sell our eggs via the webshop or by ordering through SMS.
If you live within a 15 km radius of us (Bjästa), we deliver the eggs to your home for free on Monday and Thursday evenings. This is because the sales stand is closed due to the cold—just a bit of extra service for our loyal customers.

If you’d like to come and visit our ladies, you are always welcome.
We do kindly ask that you send a text message, email, or messageon forehand if you’d like to come, so we can make sure we have all the time for you. Our ladies can also prepare for your arrival.
They’ll wash up and look their best for your arrival.

I hope you enjoy the eggs just as much as we do, because of course we also eat the delicious eggs ourselves—every single day. We keep the eggshells, let them dry, and grind them to give them back to the chickens. Now that’s ecological.

I hope that after reading this post, you have gotten to know our lovely Ladies a little.

Greetings from us and our “Ladies”
